Clinical Trials Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are clinical trials?
Studies carried out in order to test the safety and effectiveness of vaccines and drugs before they’re licensed for use
What are the four features of clinical trials?
Randomised
Double blind
Placebo controlled
Large sample size
What is randomised?
The subjects involved in clicks trials are split up in a random way to reduce bias in the distribution of characteristics
Example-age
What is double blind?
Neither the subjects being tested or the researchers know which group the subjects are in to reduce bias
What is placebo controlled?
One group will receive the drug and one will receive a “dummy drug” that takes the same form but lacks the active ingredient
This acts like a control and allows a valid comparison and proof thag any improvement is as a result of the drug alone
What is large sample size?
The group size must be large to reduce the magnitude of experimental error and increase the reliability of the results
