Clinically Relevant Anatomy of the Back, Spine and Spinal Cord Flashcards
(32 cards)
Extrinsic back muscles
Trapezius, latissimus dorsi, levato scapulae, major and minor rhomboids
Intrinsic back muscles
Transversospinalis & erector spinae
What are the 3 muscle fibres which make up erector spinae?
Iliocostalis, spinalis & longissimus.
Which muscles are responsible for extension of the spine?
Intrinsic back muscles
Which muscles are responsible for flexion of the spine?
Posts major & rectus abdomens
What is the nerve supply to the intrinsic back muscles?
Posterior rami (myotome pattern).
Which areas of the spine display primary curvature?
Kyphosis - thoracic and sacral
Wich areas of the spine display secondary curvature?
Lordosis - cervical and lumbar
Name the joint between the vertebral columns at the articular processes.
Facet joints
Which vertebral process projects laterally & articulates with the ribs?
Transverse process
Which vertebral process projects posteriorly?
Spinous process
In conjunction with the other vertebral bodies this foramen forms the canal that conveys and protects the spinal cord
Vertebral foramen
Which structures form the vertebral arch?
Lamina x2 and pedicle x2
Which foramen is found bilaterally between adjacent vertebrae, forming a channel for the spinal nerves?
Intervertebral foramen.
Pain from he facet joints is transmitted by which nerves?
Posterior rami
Which structures are found between the bodies of adjacent vertebrae?
Vertebral discs
Which structures make up the vertebral disc?
Annulus fibrosis - hard, forms periphery (strength)
Nucleus pulposus - softer, forms centre (flexibility)
Short ligamentous structure which connects the laminae of adjacent vertebrae
Ligamentum flavum
A long narrow (weak) ligamentous structure at the posterior aspect of the spine to prevent over-flexion.
Posterior longitudinal ligament
A long broad (strong) ligamentous structure at the anterior aspect of the spine to prevent over-extension.
Anterior longitudinal ligament
Strong short ligamentous structure found between the spinous processes of adjacent vertebrae.
Spinous ligament
Short weak ligamentous structure connecting the superior and inferior surfaces of adjacent spinous process.
Interspinous ligament
A foramen found only in the cervical vertebrae for passage of vertebral arteries.
Transverse foramen in transverse processes
Which vertebra has no body or spinous process?
Atlas (C1)
