who was clive wearing
Highly skilled trained musician, chorus master for the london sinfonietta, skilled pianist and conductor. Contracted herpes simplex virus (cold sore virus) it attacked his brain, specifically the hippocampus and parts of the cortex, resulted in severe anterograde amnesia (cant make new memories) and retrograde amnesia (cant recall past events clearly)
Describe how the different memory types were affected by Clive Wearings
episodic: severely damages, can’t retain new episodic memories
semantic: patchy, remembers facts from old life (singing for pope) but not details
procedural: intact, plays piano, reads music, conducts orchestra
STM: minimal- memory spans last seconds, moments in time
what state does Clive exist in and give examples of this
Lives in perpetual present, believes he has just woken up every few minutes. He records this obsesively om his diary
real examples: when his wife Deboreh enters the room several times, each tome he acts as if he hasn’t seen her in years
‘‘Im concious for the first time’’
‘‘It’s the first time i’ve seen anybody at all’’
when holding a chocolate in his hand and covering it, he thinks he has conjured it from nowhere
Clive described his own life as : ‘‘hell on earth- its like being dead- all the bloody time’’
how is the multistore model relevent to Clive wearing
Supports the idea of seperate memory stores: Clive’s STM works briefly but info not transferred to LTM (due to hippocampal damage)
