Multi‑Store Model
Overview
Memory consists of three distinct stores through which information passes in a linear sequence: Sensory Register → Short‑Term Memory → Long‑Term Memory.
Sensory Register function
Function: Receives and briefly holds sensory input from the environment (sights, sounds, etc.).
mation is lost.
Sensory Register
Capacity
Capacity: Very large (all sensory data).
Sensory Register duration
very brief- miliseconds
sensory reg encoding
modaliy specific- iconic for visual, echoic, auditory
how does info go to the control process for sensory register
if u pay attention it passes through STM
Unattended info is lost
STM function
temporary store hold infomation cuently in concious awareness and does initial processing
capacity of STM
7 +/- chunks of infomation
duration of STM
brief 15-30 seconds without rehearsal
How is STM primarily encoded
acoustic
what is the control process of STM
maintenance rehearsal keeps it in stm
prolonged rehearsal transfers info to LTM
Function of Long term memory
stores info indefinitely for future retrieval
Capacity long term memory
potencially unlimited
duration of long term memory
potencially forever
Long term memory Encoding
Primarily semantic also visual and auditory
