Selective alpha-2 agonist which upregulates presynaptic inhibition of sympathetic fibres in the central nervous system. This reduces sympathetic outflow from the brain which gives it utility as an anti-hypertensive. This also reduces the sympathetic mediated release of renin which can also contribute to its anti-hypertensive effects.
