Cloning Flashcards
(7 cards)
What kind of cloning used in plants
micropropagation
what is the process of micropropagation
a plant with desirable characteristics is selected to be cloned
Explants are taken
Explants are sterilised and grown in vitro (containing a nutrients medium)
Cells in the explants divide and grow into small plants
The small plants are taken out of the medium and planted in soil in a glasshouse
They will develop into plants genetically identical to the original plant
what does grown in vitro mean
placed in a petri dish which contains a nutrient medium
With all the nutrients they need such as growth hormones
How do you clone an adult mamal
transplanting a nucleus
what is the process of transplanting a nucleus
the nucleus of a sheep’s egg cell is removed
Thus creates an enucleated cell
A diploid nucleus is inserted to replace the missing nucleus
The nucleus comes from a mature udder of another sheep
The cell was stimulated by an electric shock
This encourages it to start dividing via mitosis
The diving cell was implanted into the uterus of another sheep
This produced a clone of dolly the sheep
what does transgenic mean
Species that contains
Genes transferred from another species
what can cloning be used for
created identical offspring
Cows and sheep make milk with the gene of the human protein
Can produce human antibodies to be used in therapy for arthritis
Transgenic chickens can also be used to have human proteins in their egg white
The transgenic animals can also be cloned to pass on the genetic characteristics
