What is the halo effect?
a type of cognitive bias in which the overall impression of a person influences how others feel and think about a person’s specific traits.
What is the physical attractiveness stereotype?
Tendency to assume that attractive people posses other socially desirable traits in addition to their looks
What does the physical attractiveness stereotype lead to?
Self-fulfilling prophecy - they may develop higher self-confidence and social skills, which then reinforce others’ positive perceptions.
What are some negative outcomes of the physical attractiveness stereotype?
Stalking and avoidance due to upward social comparisons
What are upward social comparisons?
people compare themselves to those they see as better or more attractive, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy or avoidance
What does facial symmetry signal in evolutionary terms?
Marker of biological ‘quality’, indicating a diverse gene pool, stronger, better mate, more fertile
What are the gender differences in mate preferences?
women focus on status and men focus on youth and beauty

It’s the tendency for people to be attracted to others who are similar to them in physical attractiveness - matched couples tend to have longer lasting relationships
