closed gloving Flashcards
(8 cards)
This technique is performed after donning a sterile gown, ensuring that the wrist cuffs of the gown remain sterile. The hands are kept within the cuffs of the gown while applying gloves, which prevents direct contact with non-sterile surfaces.
closed-gloving technique
what is the purpose of closed-gloving
- Prevents bare skin from being exposed, which can lead to contamination.
- Shields the surgical team from the patient’s blood and body fluids.
- Reduces the risk of microbial and body fluid contamination of the surgical wound.
Materials Needed for Closed-Gloving Technique?
Sterile Gloves
Procedure for Closed-Gloving Technique (Steps 1-8)
- Prepare appropriately sized sterile gloves. Inspect the packaging and check the expiration date.
- Drop the sterile gloves on the sterile field while observing proper aseptic technique.
- Proceed with surgical scrubbing and unassisted gowning.
- With the hands and fingers still inside the gown’s sleeves, open the inner packaging of the sterile gloves.
- With your left hand inside the gown’s sleeves, lift the right glove by the cuff, or using your right hand, pick up the right glove with palm-up technique.
- Move your hand so that your fingers are halfway down the cuff of your gown and the cuff of the gloves. Do not let the fingers protrude from the gown cuff or touch the end of the cuff.
- With your right hand still inside the sleeve, take hold of the folded cuff of the glove and pull it out and over the right hand and well over the cuff of the right sleeve using your ungloved left hand covered with the gown’s sleeve.
- With the fingers of the gloves aligned with the fingers, pull the gloves as necessary to ensure proper fit.
Key Points for Gloving
- Take care not to contaminate the outside surface of the glove.
- In serving the gloves, the nurse must have a wide base of support by putting her foot apart. Always serve the right hand glove first.
Key Points for Gloving
- In serving, get the right glove with the left and the left hand glove with the right hand. Always keep gloved hands at waist level or above.
- Keep your hands above your waist and in front of you.
- Ensure you do not touch anything around you that is not sterile, including your face, mask, and hairnet.
Removing the Gown
1. With the gloves still on, ask the circulating nurse to loosen the ties and the belt.
2. Grasp the right shoulder of the gown and slip off the arm, allowing the sleeves to turn inside out. Repeat the same procedure for the opposite shoulder.
3. Discard the gown in the hamper.
Removing the Gloves
1. With the gloved right hand, remove the left glove by holding it at its outer surface and pulling off (this is the glove-to-glove technique).
2. To remove the right glove, insert your thumb or three fingers between the skin and the glove and pull off (this is the skin-to-skin technique).
