What are the procedure for Surgical Hand Scrubbing (Steps 1-8)

  1. Put on surgical cap, shoe covers, a mask, and if necessary, protective eye gear.
    • Cap or hood: all facial and head air must be completely covered.
    • Shoe covers are worn.
    • Mask should cover the nose and mouth snugly.
  2. Examine hands and forearms for cuts and abrasions.
  3. Remove all jewelry.
  4. Prepare the materials.
  5. Turn on water using knee or foot controls and adjust to proper water flow.
  6. Perform medical hand washing.
  7. Clean fingernails with nail clear or orange stick under running water and discard after use.
  8. Rinse hands and arms thoroughly under running water. Keep hands above the elbow.

What are the Procedure for Surgical Hand Scrubbing (Steps 9-18)

A
  1. Scrub nails of the non-dominant hand first with thirty (30) strokes.
  2. Scrub all sides of the fingers, five (5) strokes per side, starting from the thumb to small finger.
  3. Scrub the back of the hand in circular motion, 20 strokes.
  4. Scrub the palm of the hand in circular motion, 20 strokes.
  5. Continue scrubbing the arm in circular motion with friction for 15 strokes each in the lower, middle, and upper arm.
  6. Repeat steps 9 to 13 for the dominant hand.
  7. After scrubbing the second arm, drop the brush.
  8. Rinse the hands, keeping the fingertips higher than the elbow.
  9. Turn off water with foot or knee control.
  10. Leave the scrub area with hands higher than the elbows.
