ETOH metabolism

A

Via ADH into acetyl aldehyde which then gets broken down into acetate, both via zero order kinetics.

Also via micro 450 which is 1st order kinetics into Acetyl Ald.

A

Enhances GABA affinity and also inhibits NMDA mediated glutamatergic neurotransmission

A

Disulfiram inhibits ADH causing acetyladehyde to build up causing severe headache, nausea, vomiting.

Metronidazole is disulfiram like.

Methanol metabolism

A

–>Formaldehyde–>formic acid (Acidosis)

Use bicarb for acidosis and ETOH to saturate ADH to prevent metabolism of methanol
