Coach and Preformer Flashcards
(18 cards)
What would a coaching session look like at Level A (command) for the learners and the coach?
And an example sport that would use command
The coach will give almost all input, and learners almost none, allowing them to develop
E.g. a Athletics throwing lesson… javelin
What would a coaching session look like at H (problem solving) for the learners and the coach?
And an e.g of sport using this method
The coach will provide no input, and learners will have to do research and discovery.
This approach encourages independent learning during activities.
What is the coaching style spectrum mentioned in the text?
A command
F guided discovery
C Reciprocal
H problem solving
These styles cater to different learning needs and promote various aspects of skill acquisition.
Define guided discovery in coaching.
The teacher provides information, queues, and questions in order to guide the learner into the discovery of movement skills. Use our progressive questioning to allow the learner to discover correct movement skills and techniques. The Performer is given responsibility through trial and error.
For E.g, gymnastics routine may have been made, but the coach allows the group to rearrange it to individual components to develop understanding and give creative freedom
What is the significance of the coaching styles spectrum?
It helps coaches select appropriate methods based on the learners’ needs and contexts.
Different styles can be more effective depending on the specific learning objectives.
True or False: At Level A (command), the coach has a high level of input during sessions.
True
At Level A, the coach provides all input to encourage learners to learn correct techniques in safe environment.
Fill in the blank: The coaching style that encourages learners to solve problems on their own is called _______.
Guided discovery or problem solving
This style fosters autonomy and decision-making in learners. Athletes require feedback during sessions. Instils greater understanding and reinforces correct responses.
Advantages of command
Learners closely follow teachers’ movements , decisions, and strategies and can learn correct techniques.
Useful in dangerous situations where safety is required
Useful for beginners
Disadvantages of command
No input from performer , so lack of kinesthesis and may lack interest/enjoyment
Learners are unable to adapt to new situations , such as game play
Little opportunity for social interaction.
Inhibit cognitive learning.
Command definition and example of sport
Authoritarian style, coach has all control and input. Learners dontvhave any.
Used in dangerous sports such as throwing javelin or learning trampoline skill
Advantage of reciprocal
More social interaction
Allows learners to be encourages to give and require feedback in sessions
Reciprocal definition and eg of sport
The teacher decides on what is to be taught. And the learners then working groups taking it in turns to be the teacher.
Teacher interacts to ensure that the correct content or skill is being taught.
Football drills in a footy sesh. E.g, teaching intermediate athlete to shoot w/ weaker foot
Disadvantages of reciprocal (C)
It’s not good for beginners
It’s not good for those with porridge communication skills
Advantages of guided discovery
More social interaction allowed
Learners are encouraged to give and require feedback during sessions.
Disadvantages of guided discovery
Can be very time, consuming
Needs to be tailored to each performer’s level of development
Hard to use with larger groups.
Problem solving definition and eg of sport
Gives learner responsibility for their own learning.
Improves self confidence, allows group interaction and hence group cohesion and allows for further strategies to be developed.
E.g The coach sets a problem to solve such as.How could you attack a short corner in football
Advantages of problem solving
Instils greater understanding
Enables decision making and reasoning processing
Reinforcement of correct respons
Disadvantages of problem solving
Time consuming
Difficult for teachers to know what has been learnt
Requires learners to be able and confident
