coastal management - hard engineering Flashcards
(14 cards)
what does hard engineering involve?
man made structures that aim to prevent erosion?
what are groynes?
timber or rock protrusions that trap sediment from LSD
groyne +
built up the beach, protect cliff = tourism, cost effective
groyne -
ugly, deprives areas downwind of sediment increasing erosion elsewhere
what are sea walls?
concrete structures that absorbs and reflect wave energy, with curved surface
sea walls +
effective erosion prevention, promenade = toursim
sea wall -
ugly, expensive, wave energy reflected elsewhere, impacts erosion rates
what is Rip Rap (rock armour)
large rocks that reduce wave energy, but allow water to flow through
rip rap +
cost effective
rip rap -
rocks are sourced elsewhere - dont fit geology, hazard
what are revetments?
wooden or concrete ramps that help absorbs wave energ
revetments +
cost effective
revetments -
ugly, maintenance (additional cost)
what are offshore breakwaters
rock barriers which force waves to break
