Coasts Flashcards
(4 cards)
What are the 4 erosional processes?
Hydraulic action- Waves crash into rocks compressing air into the cracks, overtime repeated compression widens the cracks and shatter.
Corrosion- Water dissolves minerals from the rocks washing them away.
Abrasion- Eroded water particles scrape and rub against rocks (when chucked with the wave) removing small pieces.
Attrition- Eroded particles in the water collide with each other causing them to become more rounded.
Factors influencing erosional processes
Wave type (constructive/destructive)
Wave fetch
Wind
Lithology
Coastline shape
Plant roots
Tides
Seasons
Consequences of coastal recession
Economic and social losses:
Damage to houses and businesses means ppl have to relocate whilst repairs take place. Houses lose value.
Less developed countries rely on international aid.
Infrastructure such as roads, railways, housing, emergency services and commercial properties are at risk.
Islands like Tuvalu and The Maldives at huge risk of coastal flooding.
