1
Q

What is a strength of Baddeley’s study on the coding of memory?

A

It identified 2 memory stores. STM is mostly acoustic and LTM is mostly semantic. Led to development of multi store model.

Q

What is a limitation of Baddeley’s study on the coding of memory?

A

It used artificial stimuli. The words in the list had no personal meaning so it tells us little about real life. STM can be semantic too when people process meaningful data- so has limited application.

Q

What is a strength of Jacob’s study on capacity?

A

It has been replicated. May have lacked controls but have been confirmed in later controlled studies. So it is a valid measure of digit span in STM.

Q

What is a limitation of Miller’s study on capacity?

A

It overestimates STM capacity. Cowan reviewed other research and said that capacity was only about 4 chunks. So lower end of Miller’s estimate is more appropriate.

Q

What is a limitation of Peterson and Peterson’s study on duration on STM?

A

It had meaningless stimuli. Recall of consonant syllables doesn’t reflect everyday memory tasks. So study lacks external validity.

Q

What is a strength of Bahrick et al.’s study?

A

Has high external validity. Everyday meaningful memories (faces of people and names) were studied. When lab studies were done with meaningless pictures, recall was lower. Bahrick’s findings reflect a real estimate of duration of LTM.
