The Working Memory Model Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the central component of the working memory model?
The central executive.
What is the working memory model a model of and who proposed it?
A model of STM. Proposed by Baddeley and Hitch.
Fill in the blank: The working memory model consists of the central executive, the phonological loop, the visuospatial sketchpad, and the __________.
episodic buffer.
What are the two subsystems of the phonological loop?
Phonological store and articulatory rehearsal system.
What is the function of the Visuo-spatial sketchpad?
Processes visual and spatial information
What role does the central executive play in the working memory model?
It monitors incoming data, has a limited storage capacity and allocates subsystems to tasks.
Where does the episodic buffer integrate information from?
The phonological loop and visuospatial sketchpad with long-term memory.
What is the function of the phonological store and the articulatory process?
Phonological store: stores the words you hear.
Articulatory process: allows maintenance rehearsal.
Who divided the VSS and what are the roles of the subsystems?
Logie (1995). Visual cache: stores visual data. Inner scribe: records arrangement of objects in visual field.
What is the coding and capacity of each store in the model?
Central executive: coding is flexible, capacity is limited. Phonological loop: acoustic coding, capacity is 2 seconds. VSS: visual and spatial coding. Capacity is 3 or 4 objects. Episodic buffer: coding is flexible, capacity is about four ‘chunks’.
When was the episodic buffer added and what does it maintain?
Added in 2000. Maintains sense of time sequencing.
