Coding - Memory Flashcards
Psychology (6 cards)
How is STM encoded?
Acoustically - sound
How is LTM encoded?
Semantically - meaning
Explain Baddley’s study of Encoding in STM.
4 groups, 4 lists. 2 lists coded acoustically similar and different, 2 lists coded semantically similar and different. Participants were given the lists in the wrong order and had to recall them back in the right order, this was repeated 4 times.
What were the results of Baddley’s study encoding in STM?
The group who had to recall the acoustically similar list did the worst; by the 4th trial they had recalled 55% of the words.
Explain Baddley’s study of encoding in LTM.
4 groups, 4 lists. 2 lists coded acoustically similar and different, 2 lists coded semantically similar and different. Participants were given the lists in the wrong order and had to recall them back in the right order. There was a 20 minute interval after being shown the words where the participants were doing something else. This was repeated 4 times.
What were the results of Baddley’s study encoding in LTM?
The group who had to recall the semantically similar list ,did the worst; by the 4th trial 55% of the words were recalled.
