Cognitive Flashcards
(41 cards)
What are the characteristics of the three memory stores?
Duration, Capacity, Encoding
SM = Sensory Memory, STM = Short-Term Memory, LTM = Long-Term Memory.
What is the duration of Sensory Memory (SM)?
Very brief.
What is the duration of Short-Term Memory (STM)?
Up to 30 seconds.
What is the duration of Long-Term Memory (LTM)?
Up to a lifetime.
What is the capacity of Sensory Memory (SM)?
Very high.
What is the capacity of Short-Term Memory (STM)?
7 ± 2 items.
What is the capacity of Long-Term Memory (LTM)?
Unlimited.
What is the encoding method for Sensory Memory (SM)?
Sense-dependent.
What is the encoding method for Short-Term Memory (STM)?
Acoustic.
What is the encoding method for Long-Term Memory (LTM)?
Semantic.
Define free recall in memory retrieval.
Retrieve from memory with no ‘help.’
Define cued recall in memory retrieval.
Retrieve from memory with help from a cue.
What is recognition in the context of memory?
Remembering something when we’ve encountered it before.
What are cues in memory?
Triggers to assist memory, either meaningful or meaningless.
What is reconstructive memory?
Memories reconstructed from fragments into a meaningful whole.
What is a schema in cognitive psychology?
Mental package of knowledge.
What are the three processes involved in schema?
- Shortening
- Rationalisation
- Confabulation
What is cognitive priming?
Experience of one stimulus affects response to a later stimulus.
What are the types of cognitive priming?
- Repetition
- Semantic
- Associative
What are cognitive scripts?
Knowledge of how social situations play out.
What is person perception?
How we categorise individuals into ‘types.’
What is fundamental attribution error (FAE)?
Explaining others’ behavior due to personality, not situation.
What is confirmation bias?
Noticing, storing, recalling information that confirms existing beliefs.
What is hostile attribution bias (HAB)?
Neutral behavior seen as threatening, leading to aggressive response.
