Cognitive Approach Flashcards
(3 cards)
Describe and give an example in internal mental processes:
Sees humans as information processors, where essential cognitive processes work together to enable us to make sense of and respond to the world around us.
Griffiths, asked participants to use introspection when playing on a fruit machine, to find the though process behind gamblers. He found that regular gamblers made more irrational verbalisation.
Describe and give an example in the computer analogy:
Humans brain work similar to that of a computer. our senses work as an input, information is then stored and processed, then retrieved when needed.
Atkinson and Shiffrin, devised the multi-store model of memory. First store is sensory memory and involves an input from various senses. If you pay attention to the input, the information moves to short term memory. Rehearsing it will lead to long term memory where it can be retrieved when needed.
Describe and give and example in Schemas:
Describes as packets of information that are built up through experience and stored in our long term memory, however they do not represent reality and can be formed through social exchanges. Concepts of scripts is a popular idea in schemas, these are how we expect situations to unfold.
Dion et al, found that individuals who were judged to be physically attractive were also judged to be more competent romantic partners. Therefore schemas would explain why we enter romantic relationships with people we find physically attractive.
