When the participants arrived they were greeted by the ‘experimenter’ 31 yr old man dressed in a technicians coat, as well as another ‘participant’ who was 47 yr old accountant (these were both confederates of Milgram). The participants drew slips of paper which was rigged as they were always assaigned the teacher. They were both taken into a room where the learner was strapped to an electric chair with an electrode that was assumed to pass an electric shock . There was a shock machiene with voltage reaching up to 450 volts, the teacher was made aware of this and was given a test shock to see its real. Everytime the learner would get an answer wrong a shock would be administered, until a certain point the learner was told to stop reacting and bang on the wall. The experimenter was trained to give special prods if the teacher asked for guidance like “please continue”. After the experiment the teacher was debriefed.
