(8 cards)

1
Q

What is a schema?

A

-A mental framework for our beliefs and expectations that influence our cognitive processing.
-They are developed through past experiences

Q

What advancements in technology have allowed for greater understanding of cognitive neuroscience

A
  • PET scans and fMRI scans have been able to describe neurological processes which were used for Buckner and Peterson observing how these different types of long-term memory are located in different areas of prefrontal cortex.

-Also used to find areas associated with mental disorders - parahippocampal gyrus associated with OCD.

Q

What are computer/ theoretical models?

A

-Used to help understand internal mental processes
-Theoretical models = abstract and computer models are concrete

Q

What is one important approach of the theoretical model and examples?

A

-Information processing approach which suggests information flows through the cognitive system in a sequence of stages e.g. multi store memory model

-If the coding leads to similar results as humans can suggest similar functions are taking place in machines and humans - leads to AI or “thinking machines”

Q

What are the strengths of the cognitive approach?

A

-Objective and scientific: The cognitive approach utilises extremely controlled lab studies to produce reliable and objective data. This means the emergence of the cognitive neuroscience has enabled biology and cognitive approach to enhance effect.
However, the Cognitive approach relies on inferences on mental processes so is not completely reliant on direct observation and can become theoretical in nature. Therefore may lack external validity.

-Real-world application: Cognitive approach has been used in the creation of AI and robots and has increased the reliability of eye-witness testimonies.

Q

What are the limitations of the cognitive approach?

A

-Machine reductionism: The comparisons of humans to machines reduces the effect of emotions and
