Cognitive Approach Flashcards
(9 cards)
Assumptions about cognitive approach
-In direct contrast to behaviourist approach
-Internally mental processes should be studied scientifically
-Focuses on behaviours that were ignored by behaviourists
Memory, perception and thinking
-These behaviours are private
Observed indirectly
-They make inferences about what people are thinking in their mind which affects behaviour
Role of schema
Mental frameworks that affect a persons beloveds or behaviour’s
Packages of information developed through experience
For example: Schema for a chair, it has legs and u sit on it
Theoretical and computer models
Use theoretical and computer models to help them understand internal mental processes
Important theoretical model
Information processing approach
What is the information process approach
Suggests that information Flows through the cognitive system in a sequence of stages, these include, input, storage and retieval as in the multi store model. Based on the way that computes function
Cognitive neuroscience
The scientific study of the influence of brain structures on mental processes
What does damage to frontal lobe damage
Impair speech production
Last 25 years, what brain imaging techniques have advanced
fMRI and PET, describe the neurological basis of mental processes.
What did PET and fMRIs allow to be studied
Research into episodic and semantic memory, able to show different types of LTM, may be located on opposite sides of the prefrontal cortex
