cognitive approach Flashcards
(11 cards)
what does the cognitive approach state?
that reasoning, perception, memory can all be studied scientifically - they study how mental processes affect behaviour
what is a ‘schema’?
little ‘pockets’ of information, that are filled through experience, and they act as a framework for the interpretation of oncoming information
what do schemas do?
help us to minimise our cognitive load but can also cause us to develop stereotypes
what is an inference?
to infer is to go beyond the evidence presented to make assumptions about mental processes that can’t be directly observed
what are theoretical and computer models?
- Theoretical model are abstract and use step by step guidelines to show info.
- computer models explain now human mine is similar to a computer
- a theoretical model is MSM
- a computer model is AI
what is cognitive neuroscience?
scientific study of the impact of brain structures on mental processes
what are some examples of machines used in cognitive neuroscience?
- PET scans = radio active substance
- EEG scans = sensors measuring electrical activity
- MRI scans = magnetic fields and radio waves
strength of the cognitive approach (objective)
highly controlled, rigorous methods - brain scans are used (biology and cognitive psychology have come together)
limitation of the cognitive approach (infer)
based on inferences rather than observation - often carried out with artificial stimuli aswell
strength of cognitive approach (implications)
contributed to AI and development of robots + applied to treatment of depression
limitation of cognitive approach (machine reductionism)
reduces complex human mind to a computer - humans have conscience, emotion etc
