Cognitive Approach Key Terms 2 Flashcards
(5 cards)
Flashbulb Memory
Brown & Kulik’s theory that memories created as the result of high levels of emotion – particularly surprise – are like “photographs.” The theory argues that a lot of peripheral and irrelevant information is retained.
peripheral: of minor/secondary importance
Long-Term Memory (LTM)
Has an unlimited capacity/memory; informative knowledge is held indefinitely—encoding is mainly semantic (but can be visual/auditory)
Multi-Store Model
Displacement
Suggestion that a memory’s place in the STM is dislodged by another item
