cold blooded vertebrate Flashcards
(26 cards)
vertebrates
an animal of a large group distinguished by the possession of a backbone or spinal column, including mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fishes.
endotherms
an animal that is dependent on or capable of the internal generation of heat.
ectotherms
an animal that is dependent on external sources of body heat.
lateral line
a visible line along the side of a fish consisting of a series of sense organs which detect pressure and vibration.
gills
a respiratory organ found in many aquatic organisms that extracts dissolved oxygen from water and excretes carbon dioxide.
jawless fishes
a superclass of jawless fish in the phylum Chordata, subphylum Vertebrata, consisting of both present and extinct species.
cartilaginous fishes
jawed vertebrates with paired fins, paired nares, scales, a heart with its chambers in series, and skeletons made of cartilage rather than bone.
bony fishes
a diverse taxonomic group of fish that have skeletons primarily composed of bone tissue, as opposed to cartilage.
swim bladder
a gas-filled sac present in the body of many bony fishes, used to maintain and control buoyancy.
amphibians
Amphibians are ectothermic, tetrapod vertebrates of the class Amphibia.
lungs
a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest.
tadpole
the larval stage in the life cycle of an amphibian, particularly that of a frog or toad.
metamorphosis
the process of transformation from an immature form to an adult form in two or more distinct stages.
caecilians
tropical amphibians that look like large worms or slick snakes.
salamanders
a group of amphibians typically characterized by a lizard-like appearance, with slender bodies, blunt snouts, short limbs projecting at right angles to the body, and the presence of a tail in both larvae and adults.
frogs
any member of a diverse and largely carnivorous group of short-bodied, tailless amphibians composing the order Anura.
toads
a common name for certain frogs, especially of the family Bufonidae, that are characterized by dry, leathery skin, short legs, and large bumps covering the parotoid glands.
reptiles
tetrapod animals in the class Reptilia, comprising today’s turtles, crocodilians, snakes, amphisbaenians, lizards, tuatara, and their extinct relatives.
amniotic eggs
The type of egg produced by reptiles, birds, and prototherian mammals, in which the embryo develops inside an amnion.
turtles
diapsids of the order Testudines characterized by a special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs and acting as a shield.
tortoises
reptile species of the family Testudinidae of the order Testudines.
crocodiles
large semiaquatic reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.
alligators
a crocodilian in the genus Alligator of the family Alligatoridae.
snakes
elongated, legless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes.
