When was tehran conference
1943
What was agreed upon?
USA and UK would open a western front on Nazi Germany to releive pressure on the soviets
Stalin would join the Pacific war after Nazi Germany’s defeat
Poland receives land from Germany, Soviets could keep the land seized in 1939 - This was important as stalin wanted to secure his western border
When was Yalta?
Feb 1945
What was agreed?
Germany be split between UK USA France and USSR
Stalin joins pacific war 3 months after Germany’s defeat

July-August 1945

Labour party won elections in 1945, making clement Atlee the new pm of UK + Roosevelt died, leading to Truman taking office in USA

What was agreed on at Yalta?
Germany debuded into 4 zones
Economy will be run as a whole
Berlin was also divided
Each country will take reparations from their occupied zones
Since Soviets owned the poorest zone, they could take a quarter of the others
When did Hiroshima and Nagasaki happen?
6th aug 1945 & 9th aug 1945
Why did this cause tensions between USA AND USSR?
USA seemed more powerful, making countries in western Europe feel secure under America’s protection.
This made capitalism more influential than communism
This would cause stalin to feel intimidated
How did the Soviets respond to this “threat”, and what did this mistrust anc competition cause?
On 28/8/1949, they tested their own atomic bomb
It lead to the fall of the grand alliance
What did this lead to?
The formation of the kenan telegram, and Novikov telegram, in which they spied on one another
What did Kenan’s telegram state?
Stalin wanted to see the collapse of capitalism

USA wanted to use their massive military to dominate the world
Why did stalin give up the countries freed during ww2
To make a usefuk buffer zone between USSR and Germany
What did he do with them?
He turned them into sattelite states with communist governments and gave then little independence
In 1944?
Poles staged a rebellion against the Germans called the Warsaw Uprising.
How did the soviets react?
They promised to support, but only invaded after the rebellion was crushed. They invaded poland and placed a pro communist government in charge.
In Hungary, 1945?
Elections were held, but not enough communist were elected
What happened in 1947 in Hungary
Voters were intimidated in a campaign by supported by moscow
Causing a communist gov to be set in place
In 1944 and 45?
Soviets rook bulgaria and romania. Free elections were allowed, but in reality the people were intimidated like Hungary
What was the Truman doctrine and when was it made, and why?
USA would provide economic, and military aid to countries threatned by communism, it was made in 1947 as a result of Britain being unable to give military support to greece against communist guerrillas
What was the marshall plan
This provided economic aid to countries after ww2
They would offer $13 bn in aid to any country that wanted it
The idea was that if the countries were economically strong they could fight off communism
