coldblooded Flashcards
Vertebrates
an animal that has a backbone
Endotherms
an animal that can use body heat from chemical reactions in the body’s cells to maintain a constant body temperture.
Ectotherms
an organism that needs sources of heat outside of itself
Lateral Line
a faint line visible on both sides of a fish’s body that runs the length of the body and marks the location of sense organs that detect vibrations in water
Gills
a respiratory organ in which oxygen from the water is exchanged with carbon dioxide from the blood
Jawless Fishes
They have no jaws, they do not need jaws to eat. They eat dead fish on the ocean floor. Ex. hagfish and lamprey’s
Cartilaginous Fishes
they have a lateral line system and ex. sharp
Bony Fishes
ex. goldfish, tuna this class of fish is the largest
Swim Bladder
a gas-filled sac that is used to control buoyancy; also known as a gas bladder
Amphibians
they are ectotherms, and it means double life, and their young must develop in wet environments
Lungs
a respiratory organ in which oxygen from the air is exchanged with carbon dioxide from the blood.
Tadpole
the aquatic, fish shaped, larva of a frog or toad
Metamorphosis
a phase in the life cycle of many animals during which a rapid change from the immature form of an organism to the adult form takes place
Caecilians
160 species of caecilians, they live in tropical places, moist skin, do not have legs. some have bony scales in their skin
Salamanders
500 species, live under stones and logs,a long tail, four strong legs, they range from a few cm to 1.5 meters long
Frogs
A frog is any member of a diverse and largely carnivorous group of short-bodied, tailless amphibians composing the order Anura.
Toads
common name applied to certain frogs, especially of the family Bufonidae, that are characterized by dry, leathery skin, short legs, and parotoid glands
Reptiles
tetrapod animals in the class Reptilia, comprising today’s turtles, crocodilians, snakes, amphisbaenians, lizards, tuatara, and their extinct relatives
Amniotic Eggs
a type of egg that is surroundedd by a membrane, the amnion that in reptiles, bides, and egg laying mammals contains a large amount of yolk and is surrounded by a shell.
Turtles
special bony or cartilaginous shell developed from their ribs and acting as a shield. “Turtle” may refer to the order as a whole or to fresh-water and sea-dwelling testudines.
Tortoises
The top part of the shell is the carapace, the underside is the plastron, and the two are connected by the bridge. The carapace is fused to both the vertebrae and ribcage, and tortoises are unique among vertebrates
Crocodiles
large aquatic reptiles that live throughout the tropics in Africa, Asia, the Americas and Australia.
Alligators
The two living species are the American alligator and the Chinese alligator
Snakes
elongated, legless, carnivorous reptiles of the suborder Serpentes that can be.
