COLREGS Flashcards
(50 cards)
What is rule 1 part A?
‘These rules shall apply to all vessels upon the high seas and in all waters connected therewith navigable by seagoing vessels’
What is the rule 1 part B?
The rules should not interfere with special rules set by authorities for other waterways such as harbours or rivers but the special rules should conform as closely as possible to these rules.
What is rule 1 part C and part E to do with?
Special lights, sound signals and shapes for special vessels like warships, fishing vessels fishing in a fleet, vessels of special construction, etc.
What is rule 1 part D?
Traffic separation schemes may be adopted by the organisation for the purpose of these rules.
What is rule 2 part A?
Nothing in these rules shall exonerate the crew of the ship from any consequences caused by neglect to these rules and neglect to what may be ordinary practice of seamen.
What is rule 2 part B?
Due regard shall be had when making a departure from these rules when necessary to avoid immediate danger
What is rule 4?
Steering and sailing rules apply in all conditions of visibility.
What is rule 5?
Every vessel shall have a proper look-out at all times.
What is rule 6?
Every vessel shall at all times proceed at a safe speed so that she can take effective action to avoid collision.
What are the first 6 factors should be taken into consideration when determining a safe speed in rule 6?
- state of visibility
- traffic density
- manoeuvrability of vessel
- presence of background lights at night
- draught in relation to depth of water
- state of wind, sea and current and proximity to navigational hazards
What is rule 7?
- Risk of collision - all available means including radar should be used to determine the earliest warning of risk of collision.
- Bearing change of other ship should be taken into consideration when determining if risk of collision exists.
What is rule 8 part a?
Any action to avoid collision should be taken in accordance with these rules and should be taken in ample time and with due regard.
What is rule 8 part b?
Any alteration of course taken to avoid collision should be large enough for the other vessel to see visually or by radar.
What is rule 8 part c?
If there is sufficient sea room, alteration of course alone may be the most effective action to avoid collision provided it is substantial, made in good time and doesn’t result in another close quarters situation.
What is rule 8 part d?
The result of action to avoid collision should be to pass at a safe distance. The effectiveness of the action should be checked until the other vessel is past and clear.
What is rule 8 part f?
A vessel which is required not to impede the passage of other vessels should take early action to allow sufficient sea room for the vessel to pass.
What is rule 8 part e?
If a vessel needs more time to avoid collision or assess the situation, she should slow her speed or stop fully.
What does the term VESSEL mean?
Every description of water craft used or capable of being used as a means of transportation on water.
What does POWER DRIVEN mean?
Any vessel propelled by machinery.
What is a VESSEL ENGAGED IN FISHING?
A vessel that is fishing with equipment that restricts manoeuvrability such as nets or trawls.
What does SAILING VESSEL mean?
Any vessel under sail providing that propelling machinery is not being used.
What does NOT UNDER COMMAND mean?
A vessel which through exceptional circumstances is unable to manoeuvre as required so can not keep out of the way of other vessels.
What does the term SEAPLANE mean?
Any aircraft designed to manoeuvre on water.
What does it mean when a vessel is RESTRICTED IN HER ABILITY TO MANOEUVRE?
When a vessel from which it is in the nature of her work is restricted in her ability to manoeuvre so is unable to keep out of the way of other vessels.
