What is rule 20?
Lights and shapes application.
When shall the rules concerning lights be complied with? (rule 20 a, b and c)
a) Rules in this part shall be complied with in all weathers
b) The rules concerning lights shall be complied with from sunset to sunrise, and during such times no other lights shall be exhibited, except lights that can’t be mistaken for lights in these rules and lights that will not affect the visibility or distinctive character of the lights specified in these rules, or lights that interfere with keeping a proper look out.
c) The lights in these rules shall be exhibited from sunrise to sunset in restricted visibility and situations where it is deemed necessary.
When shall the rules concerning shapes be complied with? (rule 20 d)
By day.
What is rule 20 e?
The lights and shapes specified in these rules shall comply with the provisions of annex 1 to these regulations.
What does masthead light mean? (21a)
A white light placed over the fore and aft centreline of the vessel showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 225 degrees. (Ahead to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam on either side of the vessel).
What are sidelights? (21b)
A green light on the starboard side and a red light on the port side, showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 112.5 degrees (ahead to 22.5 degrees abaft the beam on its respective side).
What is a sternlight? (21c)
A white light placed as closely practicable at the stern as possible, showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 135 degrees (shows the light at 67.5 degrees on each side of the vessel).
What is a towing light? (21d)
A yellow light that has the same characteristics of a sternlight - must be as close to the stern as practicable and shows an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 135 degrees.
What is an all round light? (21e)
A light showing an unbroken light over an arc of the horizon of 360 degrees.
What is a flashing light? (21f)
A light flashing at regular intervals at a frequency of 120 flashes or more per minute.
What should the visibility of lights be on vessels over 50m in length. (22a)
masthead light - 6 miles
sternlight - 3 miles
sidelights - 3 miles
all round lights - 3 miles
towing light - 3 miles
What is the range of visibility of lights on vessels over 12m but under 50m? (22b)
Masthead light - 5 miles but for vessels under 20m it is only 3 miles.
Stern light - 2 miles
side lights - 2 miles
all round lights - 2 miles
towing lights - 2 lights
What is the range of visibility of lights for vessels under 12m in length? (22c)
Masthead light - 2 miles
sternlight - 2 miles
sidelights - 1 mile
all round lights - 2 miles
towing lights - 2 miles
What is the range of visibility of lights on inconspicuous, partly submerged vessels or objects being towed? (22d)
An all round white light with a range of 3 miles.
What lights should a power driven vessel underway exhibit? (23a)
- A masthead light forward
- Vessels over 50m must show but vessels under 50m can show if they want a second masthead light abaft of and higher than the forward one.

What lights should an air cushioned vessel operating in non-displacement mode display? (23b)
Masthead light, stern light and sidelights as well as an all-round flashing yellow light.
Wat lights should a WIG craft display when taking off, landing or flying near to the surface? (23c)
Masthead light, sidelights, sternlight as well as a high intensity all-round flashing red light.
What lights should a power driven vessel less than 12m in length display? (23di)
An all-round white light and sidelights.
What lights should a power driven vessel less than 7m in length whose max speed is 7 knots display? (23dii)
AN all-round white light and if practicable sidelights.
What is the rule regarding the placement of lights on power driven vessels under 12m? (23diii)
The masthead light or all-round white light may be displaced from the centreline of the vessel if not practicable, provided that the sidelights are combined in the same lantern which shall be carried on the centreline or as nearly as practicable in the same line as the masthead light or all-round light.
