common disease for oxygen and circulation Flashcards
(36 cards)
what is Hypoxia?
Below the expected level of oxygen in body tissue.
what are some signs and symptoms of Hypoxia
confusion, irritability, restlessness, dyspnea, pursed lip breathing, use of intercostal/accessoru muscles
true or false: Hypoxia always results from hypoxemia.
false, Hypoxia can result from anemia (can occur when blood levels are normal)
how do V.S. look for hypoxia?
tachypnea, tachycardia or bradycardia.
-BP starts high then low
What is COPD?
chronic bronchitis: (inflammation of the airways)
Emphysema: (destruction of the alveoli)
what are some symptoms of CHronic bronchitis?
cough, crackles/wheezing, cyanosis, low O2. SOB, “blue bloater”, obesity, edema
what are some symptoms of Emphysema?
barrel chest, pursed-lip breathing, “pink puffer”, pink skin, skinny
why do we use bronchodilators?
to relax the airway muscles
treatment of COPD?
Breathing techniques: pursed-lip breathing and diaphragmatic breathing
-meds
-o2
what is Asthma?
chronic inflammatory disease of airways–> leads to narrowing and swelling/bronchospasm
what are some signs and symptoms of asthma?
wheezing, SOB, chest tightness, coughing
what is Pneumonia?
infection of the lungs that causes inflammation/fluid/pus in alveoli
what are the signs and symptoms of Pneumonia?
fever/chills, SOB, crackles, confusion, cough
what are some treatments for Pneumonia?
antibiotics, O2 therapy, and using incentive spirometry
what causes hypoxia?
Respiratory issues (COPD, pneumonia), anemia, cardiac failure.
how are v.s with someone who has COPD?
high: RR, HR
low: spO2
how are v.s with someone who has asthma?
high: RR, HR
low: spO2
how are v.s with someone who has Pneumonia?
↑ HR, ↑ RR, ↑ Temp, ↓ SpO₂.
what can cause hypertension?
Obesity, salt intake, kidney disease.
what are some causes to hypotension?
Dehydration, blood loss, shock.
what is DKA?
Life-threatening complication of Type 1 diabetes
what causes DKA?
Missed insulin doses, infection, stress.
how are the vital signs on someone who has L.S. HF?
↑ HR, ↓ BP in severe cases, ↓ SpO₂
what are the tx for DKA?
IV fluids, IV insulin, correct electrolytes (watch potassium!).
