Prejudice
Believing some people are superior or inferior without even knowing them

Where different races and cultures live together in one society

A society where different ethnic groups live together peacefully

Religious freedom
The right to practice and change your religion if you want to
Religious pluralism
Accepting all religions as equally valid and correct and that therefore all have the right to co-exist
Interfaith marriage
Marriage where each partner is from a different religion
How have attitudes changed towards women?
-The equal pay act 1970
Ensures that men and women are paid equally for the same job
-The sex discrimination act 1975
Illegal to discriminate against any person because of their gender
-the qualification of women act 1918
Gave women over the age of 31 the right to vote in elections
Local government act 1892
-women could now stand as councillors
Why have attitudes towards women changed?
- During the first and Second World War women proved they could take on the work once before done by men and proved they could do them just as well.
- Countries such as New Zealand gave women equal rights opening the way for other countries.
- The work of the suffragettes showed that women didn’t just want to sit in the corner and wanted to be listened to.
- The UN declaration of human rights includes for all people no matter of their race or gender.
What are the benefits of a multi-ethnic society?
- People gain acceptance and understanding of other cultures.
- Reduces the risk of conflict.
- People can experience different cultures and foods from around the world.
- Can share innovation and new perspectives on issues.
What are the Christian views on racism?
Racism is strongly rejected in the Christian church.
- Many Christians are of different races- they should all be excepted by the faith.
- Love thy neighbour- it is loving to not discriminate and hurt others feelings.
- God created all life so not one religion is superior or inferior
- All churches have condemned racism.
What are the effects of discrimination and racism?
- If certain groups feel as if they are being treated unfairly they may cut them of from society and even work against the society
- Can lead to the rise of extreme groups such as the BNP who encourage division between different ethnic groups
- They can turn to crime as they see no good future in a discriminating society
- Can lead to acts of violence such as riots and attacks to get back at the discriminator
What can be done to promote community cohesion by the government?
EDUCATION
Part of the national curriculum in 2006
Ofsted judge all schools on how hey include community cohesion in their lessons
FUNDING
Give financial support to groups and projects which promote community cohesion and equality
PEOPLE
Establish groups such as the equality and human rights commission to ensure that laws are acted upon.
Make sure that all groups in society are represented fairly in education, police and social services
LAWS
Make it illegal to discriminate against others to prevent hatred against race or religion
What are the problems of inter faith marriages?
- Religious wedding services are difficult as each religion has its own style
- The religion in the children can cause conflict
- Some family members may feel they have betrayed their faith by marrying a person with an opposing view
- Funeral services can be a problem for family members from other religious traditions
Community cohesion
A shared sense of belonging for all groups in society
Different Christian attitudes to equal right for women:
Traditional attitude of Protestant christianity= men and women have different roles and so therefore can not have equal rights in religion.

- St.paul teaches in the New Testament that women should not teach or speak in the church
Catholic attitudes=men and women should have equal roles in life and society.
- God created both men and women at the same time
- only men disciples so only men priests
- Jesus was a man so priests should be men as they represent him
Modern attitude of Protestant Christianity= men and women should have equal rights and they have women priests and ministers.
- men and women were created at the same time one is not superior
- sanctity of life-all life was created by God and it is holy so it doesn’t matter if there gender

Islam and equal rights for women in religion:
Traditional attitude= men and women have different roles in life and religion and therefore have different rights.
- Qur’an teaches that women are to bear children
- Qur’an teaches that men should support women as they have stronger physique
- traditional for only the men to attend the mosque and be religious leaders
Modern attitude=men and women should have completely equal roles in religion and education.
- early stages of Islam their were women leaders
- Qur’an teaches that men and women are equal in religion and education
- Muhammad encouraged both men and women to worship in the mosque
How is the UK a multi-ethnic society?
- always been a mixed society eg. Saxons, Romans and celts
- the UK has always believed in human freedom and offered asylum to those suffering persecution eg. Jews escaping Hitler
- 7.9% of the population is of the ethnic minority
- part of the EU which encourage immigration
What are the problems of discrimination and racism?
- prejudice employers will not give jobs to certain ethnic groups increasing poverty
- prejudice police officers could lead to miscarriages of justice
- prejudice teachers can not help certain groups as much preventing them from achieving well or get them excluded
- prejudice landlords could refuse accommodation leading to homelessness
Why is community cohesion important?
- prevents violence
- prevents the leading of separate lives
