Comparing CNS with PNS Flashcards
(4 cards)
Both part of nervous system
so both play a role in coordinating actions of the organism
Both send and receive signals
CNS can receive sensory info from PNS, but it can also send instructions to PNS
Likewise, the PNS sends sensory info to CNS but also receives signals from the CNS and from outside world.
Whether conscious or unconscious
CNS is partially conscious whilst PNS is entirely unconscious e.g., brain coordinates conscious experiences, but the PNS’s actions are all unconscious.
Indirect or direct communication
PNS directly interacts with the outside world whereas CNS indirectly communicates with outside world.
PNS’s sensory organs (e.g., eyes) directly receive info from outside world but the CNS only receives signals from outside world once these have been processed by the PNS.
