Forming comparator/superlatives with adjectives

A

To form a comparator, add -er to the end of the adjective.
Eg schöner

To form a superlative, add ‘st’ with adjectival declension
Eg Das schönste

Use the form ‘am -sten’ if there is no noun to be understood or if something is being compared with itself (‘at its most’)
Eg ein Mercedes wäre am teuersten

Comparing two nouns

A
Comparative particle ('than') is usually als but can also be wie in colloquial speech
Eg Peter ist älter als Thomas 

Degree of difference is expressed with ‘um als’
Er ist um einen Monat jünger als ich

To express a greater degree (‘even’), noch is used
Er hat gestern noch weniger gearbeitet

Lower degrees of comparison are expressed by ‘weniger’ (less than)
Eg er war weniger optimistisch als sein Bruder

To express ‘the more x the more y’ use ‘je’ followed by ‘umso/desto’
Je länger man Deutsch lernt, desto/umso leichter wird es

A

So … wie (colloquially ‘als’ can be used)
Eg Peter ist so alt wie Thomas

‘Just as’ is expressed using ‘ebenso’ or ‘genauso’
Peter is ebenso/genauso alt wie Thomas

‘Gleich’ can be used to indicate equality
