One subordinate clause
Simple sentence
Consists of two or more independent clauses
Compound sentence. We got a dog and it is very big.
Consists of one independent clause and one or more subordinate clauses.
Complex sentence. When we get there, you need to stop talking.
Consists of two or more independent clauses and one or more subordinate clauses.
Compound-complex. After a month, the dog was was and the owner rejoiced that he and his dog were reunited again.
Generally found after action verbs (complement).
Direct Object
Noun or pronoun that appears with a direct object and names the person or thing that something is given to or done for
Indirect object
Noun or pronoun at the end of a prepositional phrase.
Object of the preposition
Adjective or noun that appears with a direct object and describes or renames it.
Objective complement.
Noun or pronoun that appears with a linking verb and renames, identifies, or explains the subject of the sentence.
Predicate nominative.
An adjective that appears with a linking verb and describes the subject of the sentence.
Predicate adjective
Prepositional phrase that modifies a noun or pronoun by telling what kind or which one.
Adjective phrase
A prepositional phrase that modifies a verb, adjective, or an adverb by pointing out where when in what way or to what extent.
Adverb phrase
List the complements
Object of the preposition, objective complement, predicate adjective, predicate nominative,direct object, indirect object.
A noun or pronoun placed near another noun or pronoun to identify, rename, or explain it.
Appositive
Noun or pronoun with modifiers, placed next to a noun or pronoun to add information and details. The girl, a very annoying person, has finally left.
Appositive phrase.
Verb acting as adjective
Participle
Participle modified by an adverb or adverb phrase accompanied by a complement, the entire phrase acts as an adjective.
Participial phrase
Gerund
A form of verb that acts as a noun.
A gerund with modifiers or a complement, all acting together as a noun.
Gerund phrase
A form of verb that generally appears with the word to and acts as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
Infinitive
An infinitive with modifiers , complements, or a subject all acting together as a noun, adjective, or adverb.
Infinitive phrase
Can stand by itself in itself as a complete sentence. (Clause)
Independent
Can’t stand by itself as a complete sentence; it can only be part of a sentence (clause)
Subordinate clause
A subordinate clause that modifies a noun or pronoun by telling what kind or which one.
