What are the factors of normal complexion and what do they correspond with?
Luster -spirit….subtle reddish hue -good heart blood….moisture -good body fluids
What are the 6 complexions?
Normal, white (pale), yellow (sallow), red, bluish/greenish, black
What does the face color reflect?
State of qi and blood and is related to condition of the mind
What does white indicate?
Cold, deficiency of blood or yang
What does Bright white correspond with
Yang deficiency (yin organs)
What does dull pale white or sallow white correspond with?
Blood deficiency
Pale white w puffy face
Yang deficiency- not enough fire
What does bluish white correspond with?
Cold
What does yellow (sallow) indicate?
Spleen deficiency and/or dampness
Pale yellow
Spleen qi def, blood def
Grayish yellow
Spleen qi def with liver qi or blood stagnation
Dry yellow?
Full or empty heat in st and spleen
Ash-like yellow?
Dampness
Rich yellow?
Qi and blood def with dampness
What does red complexion indicate?
Heat (excess or deficient)
Red face?
Excess heat - exposure to pathogenic factors with fever, hyperactive yang for zang-fu organs
Red cheeks?
Deficient heat (empty heat) … Due to yin def- hot flash, tidal fever, night sweating
Floating red?
Deficient heat - empty heat…. Severe internal cold, separation of yin/yang, yang floats to top- similar to false spirit
Bluish/greenish - more greenish
Liver pattern - liver qi stagnation, liver blood stasis, cold in liver channel or liver wind
Green complexion red eyes?
Liver fire
Bluish/greenish… Blue between eyebrows in child
Liver wind- often seen in convulsions
Greenish-bluish…Bluish complexion in pregnant women
Blood stasis and yang def and is always poor sign…. Toxicity
Black/dark complexion is related to?
Cold, pain, blood stasis, kidney deficiency
Pale black and blue
