components of blood: red blood cells Flashcards

1
Q

red blood cells

erythrocytes

A

transport o2 and co2, 44% of blood

bioconcave shape to provide a greater surface area for gas exchange
enucleated to provide more room to carry hemoglobin
produced in bone marrow (erythropoeisis)

Q

how do rbc’s transport o2 throughout the body

A

o2 binds to hemoglobin in rbc’s during gas exchange in the capillaries and alveoli. the o2 rich blood travel from the lungs to the heart through the pulmonary vein, where it is then pumped by the aorta around the body
