What is non-contrast CT of the head the best initial test for?
Severe head trauma especially with LOC of AMS
Stroke
Any form of intracranial bleed including subarachnoid hemorrhage
What is the benefit of a CT with Contrast?
Cancer and infection will enhance with contrast
What is CT with contrast the best initial test for?
Any form of intracranial mass lesion
How to manage contrast risk?
Stop metformin prior to using contrast
Hydrate with saline
Do not order contrast with severe renal failure
What do you use to evaluate the pancreas?
Abdominal CT with IV and Oral contrast
What is oral contrast useful for?
outlining abdominal structures pressed against each other
What is abdominal CT the most accurate test for?
Kidney stones
Diverticulitis
Nephrolithiasis: contrast not needed
When do you get a chest CT?
Hilar nodes: Sarcoidosis
Mass lesions: cancer
Cavities
Interstitial lung disease: adds definition to CXR
PE: Spiral CT or CT angriogram
