Computer Networks Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is a network
A group of connected computers/devices that can communicate with one another
What is a Local Area Network (LAN)?
A network that covers a SMALL geographical area (e.g. schools, buildings)
What is a WAN?
A network that spans a large geographical area (e.g. cities, groups of buildings, entire countries)
What is a client server network?
Networks that use client computers served by servers that are responsible for handling requests and holding data
What is a Peer-To-Peer network?
Networks that have computers of equal status with no servers. Computers on P2P networks store their own files which can be accessed by other computers on the network
What is a NIC?
Network Interface Controller - hardware that allows computers to connect to a network
What is a Router?
Device used to connect computers to form a network
What is a network Hub?
Network hardware used to connect multiple computers
What is a network Switch?
Device used to connect computers together to form a network
What is a WAP?
Wireless Access Point - device used to connect computers to a network via Wi-Fi
Give 3 pros of a bus topology
- Easy to set up
- Cheap
- Easy to add more devices
Give 2 cons of a bus topology
- Lots of data collisions when data is sent simultaneously, causing slow network speeds
- Whole network fails if wire is damaged or if terminator gets removed
