What is Intellectual Property?
A creation of the human mind
What is a patent?
An official licence from the government granting a person/business the exclusive rights to make, use or sell an invention
Copyright
A set of rights prohibiting the copying and distributing of a piece of work without the copyright holder’s permission
Trademark
Something that allows the identification of a brand (logos, jingles, product names)
What is Open Source software?
Software that has its source code publicly available for modification. Often free and can be edited and distributed
What is Proprietary software?
Software that does not have its source code publicly available. Costs money, annotate be edited, made by companies
What does the Copyrights Design & Patents Act (1988) do?
Protects individual property, making the copying, modification and distribution of the property prohibited without permission

- Prone to exploits and malware
- Updates are infrequent
- No official customer support
- Requires skills and knowledge to modify

- Not flexible (since you can’t modify it)
- Costs money
- May not meet the needs of the customer
