Computer Science 1.3 Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is secondary storage?
its a non-volatile memory so it can keep memory long term due to RAM being volatile.
What is Solid State Storage?
It is when data is held using electronic switches. It’s also commonly known as flash memory.
What is Magnetic Storage?
It is when data is stored using magnetic particles. its contains several platters on a spindle.
What is Optical Storage?
When you use laser to burn memory onto a disk and then use weaker lasers to read the information (pretty cool, huh).
What are some examples of Solid State Storage?
USB sticks (Memory Sticks) and SD cards.
What are some examples of Magnetic Storage?
Magnetic tape , Floppy disks and Hard disks.
What are examples of Optical Storage?
CDs, DVDs and Blu-rays.
Advantages of Solid State Storage.
- Portable.
- Large capacity.
- Doesn’t make noise.
Advantages of Magnetic Storage.
- Very large capacity.
- Low cost.
- High speed access.
Advantages of Optical Storage.
- Very portable.
- Immune to magnetic fields.
- Ideal for storing videos/films.
Disadvantages of Solids State Storage.
- Expensive.
- Limited write/erase cycles.
- Limited storage capacity.
Disadvantages of Magnetic Storage.
- Not as portable.
- Slower to write than Flash memory.
- Slower to access.
Disadvantages of Optical Storage.
- Easily scratched.
- Cannot write over stored data.
- Slow to burn.
