Computing Basic Flashcards
(26 cards)
What are the two main categories of computer components?
Hardware and Software
What is the relationship between the hardware and software
Hardware is potential; Software provide instructions
What is hardware?
The physical components installed inside or connected to a computer system.
What is software?
Electronically stored instructions or data that direct hardware.
Give an analogy for hardware and software
Hardware is like a car, and software is the driver.
What does an input device do?
Transfers information from the outside into the computer.
How does a keyboard send data to the computer?
Through a scanning chip that sends an appropriate code.
How does an optical mouse work?
Uses a light source and a sensor to track movement.
What’s the difference between resistive and capacitive touchscreens?
Resistive uses pressure; capacitive uses conductive touch like a finger.
What is a processing device?
A component that analyzes and interprets input data.
What is the CPU’s role?
It acts as the brain of the computer, processing data based on software.
What is RAM used for?
Temporarily stores processed information and running software.
What’s the difference between RAM and other storage types?
RAM is volatile and fast; others like SSD and HDD are non-volatile and persistent.
Why is RAM considered volatile?
Data is lost when power is off
Name three long-term storages
HDD, SSD, Optical Media(CD, DVD, BD)
What are Flash Drives and SD used for?
Portable non-volatile data storage
What is an output device?
Device that receive data from the computer and displays or present it
Name two common output devices
Monitor and printer
What does a sound card do?
Convert Digital info into audible signals
what is networking device?
Hardware that allows computers to communicate with each other
what forms can connecting media takes
Physical wires or radio signals
Are networking devices input or output?
Both- send and receive data
what is the modular design in computer hardware?
Standardized approach that allows components to be interchangeable.
Why is modular design beneficial?
Enables easier repairs and upgrades with non-proprietary parts
