tips on conducting an interview

  • prepare in advance
  • make appropriate arrangements - convenient time and location
  • write questions in advance
  • be prepared to take careful notes
  • listen carefully. don’t anticipate answers or break in when your subject is speaking
  • maintain eye contact. let your interviewee know you are interested – by eye contact, body language, and acknowledging what is being said with words or nods
  • ask follow-up questions
  • don’t interrupt with additional questions; make a note of additional questions you wish to ask, and ask when your subject finishes
  • get some good quotes or sotires
  • be courteous
  • be sure and thank your subject at the end of the interview
