Another way that limited developmental issues impact individuals and families is that they are more likely to be victims of conflict.
Explain 1
Statistically individuals in nations affected by limited development are more likely to experience conflict than those within developed nations as they may have to compete for resources and suffer from the consequences of a corrupt or incompetent government. Individuals within these nations may experience violence, fear and corruption which can mean that they are more likely to have to flee their homes for safety. This can mean that families are torn apart as their loved ones seek safety or even as a result of fatalities from the conflict. This can impact individuals and families significantly, especially when it comes to their mental health.
Example 1
For example, in South Sudan, where there are ongoing implications from the civil war almost 4 million citizens have been displaced as they seek safety and security.
Analysis 1
This suggests that because of developmental factors within countries, the citizens are much more likely to become victims of conflict which can result in displacement and fatalities much more so than citizens in developed nations which usually experience long periods of peace and stability.
Rebuttal
It could be argued that limited development has a more significant impact on becoming trapped in poverty.
Explain 2
Some countries are very resource rich but because the country has been unable to properly develop such. Some countries have not been able to build the infrastructure needed to utilise those resources meaning that the people remain poor. Poverty has a significant effect on individuals. If they are living in poverty, then they will often do what they can to survive. This may mean taking part in criminal activity such as becoming corrupt and accepting bribes. It could mean turning to violence as a way of gaining some kind of income.
Example 2
For example, The World Bank sets the poverty line as $1.90 a day yet according to the World Economic Forum the people of the DRC earn on average $394.256 a year ($1.08 a day) making it the poorest nation in the world. This is despite the DRC being one of the most resource rich nations in the world.
Analysis 2
This poverty-stricken nation has seen generation after generation continue the cycle of living in extreme poverty and it is hardly surprising then that so many have died due to fighting over resources or from malnutrition and hunger – all poverty related consequences faced by individuals.
