Gender Flashcards

Point
A third way that limited developmental issues impact individuals and families is that there is often reinforced gender inequality.
Explain 1
Some of the greatest levels of gender inequality exist in parts of the world that are least developed. A lack of development affects families by reinforcing gender stereotypes. With women having the primary role of caregiver to children and other family members they often become in traditional societies more reliant on a male partner to earn the income for the household.
Example 1
This is illustrated by the World Bank estimate that not educating girls over their lifetime could cost the developing world between $15-$30 trillion.
Analysis 1
This clearly proves that not educating girls deprives individuals of the opportunity to achieve their full potential, limiting their ability to secure better jobs and incomes. This loss extends to families and communities by continuing cycles of poverty.
Rebuttal
Lastly, a way that limited developmental issues impact individuals and families is that there is a likelihood of becoming trapped in the cycle of poverty.
Explain 2
Some of the least developed countries in the world are amongst the poorest. Families that live in the developing world will find it difficult to break the cycle of poverty that negatively impacts their lives. Due to of a lack of development there are fewer opportunities to break this cycle. The cycle of poverty is when a family is too poor to pay for the necessities that they need such as food, a home, health care or an education for children. Those children grow up, are less likely to be educated, be in poor health and so unable to get a job or have the strength needed to earn their way out of poverty. This means that their children will suffer as they did and so the cycle repeats.
Example 2
For example, The Guardian newspaper reported in 2016 that 250 million young children across the world (43% of under 5s) are unlikely to fulfil their potential as adults because of stunting and extreme poverty. The report found that children who do not get the nutrition and care they need, will earn an average of 26% less than other people.
Analysis 2
This means they will be more likely to have families that continue to live in poverty. This can become extreme poverty which is a consequence of these countries being less developed.
