conformity Flashcards
(11 cards)
3 situational factors affecting conformity
size of the majority, unanimity of the majority and task ambiguity/difficulty
whats size of the majority
the greater the majority, the greater the influence they have on your behaviour
asch’s study on size of majority
he had confederates act like genuine participants, but he had instructed them on what to do. when told to pick one of the three lines that resembled the single line on a separate card, the confederates all lied and picked a wrong answer. when there was only 1 confederate, 3% of participants conformed, when there were 2 confederates it rose to 13%, and when there were 3 confederates it rose to 32%.
whats the optimal number for a majority to exert an influence
three to four people
whats unanimity of the majority
you are more likely to conform if the decision/opinion is unanimous
aschs study on unanimity
if most confederates picked the wrong line but one picked the correct line, this made the participant less likely to conform
whats task difficulty/ambiguity
if the task if difficult or unclear, we are more likely to look to other for the right answer
aschs study on task ambiguity
when the three lines were similar to the comparison line, the conformity rate increased due to the ambiguity
whats a personality factor affecting conformity
locus of control (refers to how much control we believe we have over our behavior)
whats internal locus of control
when we feel that we have a lot of control over our behavior, we are less likely to be influenced by others
whats external locus of control
when we feel that we do not have control over our behavior, which means we are more likely to be influenced by others and conform
