Conformity
Conformity is indirect pressure to alter behaviour to be consistent with the group
Obedience
Obedience is direct pressure to obey orders from an authority figure
How do people conform to social norms?
People conform to social norms based on other people’s behaviour
How can conformity be described as?
It is unconscious and indirect, it is a rational and sensible strategy
Autokinetic illusion
Autokinetic illusion is when a stationary pinpoint of light appears to move when stared at in a dark room
Factors that affect conformity
- Personality (anxiety, IQ, self esteem)
- Group size (conformity needs a minimum of 3-5 group members)
- Group unanimity
- Response style
What is conformity motivated by?
Conformity is motivated by the need to be liked and the need to be right
What did Moscovici show about minority influence?
Moscovici showed in an experiment that the minority can influence the majority if the minority are consistent
