Conformity Types and explanations Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is internalisation?
We take the majority view as we think it is correct. Its a permanent change in behaviour even when group is absent.
What is identification?
We act in the same way as the group because we value it and want to be part of it. Don’t believe everything they agree.
What is compliance?
- A temporary type of conformity where we go with the majority view but privately disagree with it. Only lasts as long as group monitors us
What is ISI?
We agree with the opinion of the majority because we believe it is correct. We want to be correct as well. May lead to internalsisation
What is NSI?
We agree with the opinion of the majority because we want to gain social approval and liked. Leads to compliance
Explain types of conformity?
- Internalisation is when a person accepts the norms. Private and public change and usually permanent even when members are absent
- Identification is when we conform to the group because there is something we value and want to be part of it. Public change not private.
- Compliance is when we go along with others in public but not private. It stops as soon as group pressure stops.
Explain explanations for conformity?
ISI is about who has the better information. We are uncertain about what behaviours are right or wrong. For example when we put our hand up in class we follow the group majority bcs we want to be right. Made when decisions have to be quick
NSI is what is typical behaviour for a social group. A temporary change in opinions/behaviour. This is where you are concerned of rejection. e.g when you laugh at a joke cos everyone else it
whats a strength for NSI?
- explanation for conformity. For example when Asch interviewed his participants some participants felt self-conscious to give the correct answer. Conformity decreases when people give answers privately.
Whats a strength for ISI?
- There is research evidence to support ISI from Todd Lucas.
- Lucas found out that participants conformed more when the math problems were more difficult.
- The participants didn’t want to get the answer wrong so the relied on answers they were given.
Whats one limitation of NSI?
Does not predict conformity in every case.
- Some people are concerned by being liked by others. They’re called nAffiliators and need a strong need for affiliation.
- Paul found out that people who were nAffiliators were more likely to conform.
