Connective Tissue Flashcards
This flashcard deck was created using Flashcardlet's card creator
What is the function of connective tissue?
To “connect” one structure to another structure.
Name some examples of connective tissue.
Ligaments, tendons, cartilage, bone, blood
How does connective tissue differ from epithelial tissue?
Connective Tissue has: Few cells Vascularity Poor regeneration No polarity Lots of Extracellular Matrix (EM)
How is connective tissue similar to epithelial tissue?
Both have innervation (nerves).
What are the three structural components of connective tissue?
Cells
Protein fibers
Ground Substance
What is the Extracellular matrix comprised of in connective tissue?
Protein fibers and ground substance.
Which of the 3 components of connective tissue is sparingly present?
Cells
What are the 6 functions of connective tissue?
- Physical protection
- Support & structural framework
- Binding of structures
- Storage
- Transport
- Immune protection
What are the 3 major classifications of connective tissue?
Connective tissue proper
Supporting connective tissue
Fluid connective tissue
What are the two classes of cells in connective tissue proper?
Resident and wandering
What are resident cells?
Cells that are permanently contained within the connective tissue.
What are wandering cells?
Wandering cells are cells that move throughout the connective tissue and are involved in immune protection and repair of damaged extracellular matrix.
What is the progenitor (original or precusor) cell of all adult connective tissue?
Mesenchyme
What are the most abundant resident cells in connective tissue proper?
Fibroblasts
What cells make EM in connective tissue proper?
Fibroblasts
