Connective Tissue Flashcards
(39 cards)
Where is connective tissue found?
Lies beneath epithelia
What is function of connective tissue?
Provides structural and metabolic support for organs and tissues. Also fills space between organs and tissues
What makes up connective tissue?
Cells and extracellular matrix
What is extracellular matrix and what is it made up of?
Gel-like substance made up of protein fibres. Contains ground substance.
What protein fibres are found in ECM?
Collagen & fibrin
What is found in ground substance?
GAGs, structural proteins, either collagen OR elastin fibres
What cells are found in connective tissue?
Fibroblasts, adipocytes, immune cells
What is function of fibroblasts?
Make collagen, elastin, GAGs. Play role in secretion of ECM components
What is function of adipocytes?
Store fat
What are 2 classifications of connective tissue?
Loose irregular connective tissue. Dense regular connective tissue
What is function of loose irregular connective tissue?
Supports organs & blood vessels, links epithelial tissues to muscles underneath
Composition of LICT?
Abundant ground substance; some collagen & elastic fibres, many different cells
Where is dense irregular connective tissue found?
In joint capsules, envelops muscles, forms dermis of skin
What if function of DICT?
Provides mechanical support and tensile strength as is impact resistant
Composition of DICT?
Has little ground substance; abundant collagen and few cells. Dense network of (collagen) fibres in matrix
What is basal lamina and where is it found?
Specialised form of ECM. Lies underneath sheets of epithelial cells
What is function of basal lamina?
- Helps to attach and anchor cells to underlying connective tissue
- Limits contact between epithelial cells and other cell types (e.g. endothelial cells of blood vessels)
Where is dense regular connective tissue found?
Ligaments (link bone to bone at joint) & tendons (connections between bones or cartilage and muscle)
Arrangement of collagen fibres in DRCT?
Densely packed and arranged in parallel
What is the predominant feature in tissues with a mechanical function (i.e. ligaments, tendon, bone)?
ECM
What is the predominant feature in tissues specialised for protection?
Cells (blood - white blood cells)
What is the predominant feature in tissues specialised for metabolic maintenance?
Cells (adipocytes, blood - red blood cells)
What is ECM in bone called?
Osteoid
What produces osteoid?
Osteoblasts
