(15 cards)
Connective tissue consists of
- collagen
- elastin
- ground substance (water, fluid, protein)
6 types of connective tissue
- loose: composed of collagen and elastin (blood vessels and organs)
- Fibrous: mostly collagen, few elastin (tendons, ligaments)
- Adipose tissue (fat cells)
- Blood (cells separated by fluid
- cartilage
- bone
3 causes of autoimmune disease

Systemic lupus erythematosus
SLE
SLE affects:
Skin, lungs, kidney, CNS, circulatory system, heart, GI system, muscles and joints, oral and nasal ulcers
Pop with highest risk of SLE
Women during reproductive years
How many criteria of 11 are needed for diagnosis
4
SLE: Non erosive arthritis
transient, symmetrical, small joints, less severe than RA
SLE: neurologic features

SLE: renal features
usually asymptomatic
- up to 50% of pts develop lupus nephritis, 10% require dialysis or transplant
- Hallmark finding; proteinuria
- Severe case, gross hematuria (blood in urine)
SLE: GI
15-75% of pt’s
- oral ulcers, nausea, vomiting, pancreatitis, hepatitis, mesenteric vasculitis (severe abdominal pain)
Other symptoms of SLE
Pain, severe fatigue, memory loss, depression
PT management of SLE
- Pain management
- Therapeutic exercise and PA
- Patient education (energy conservation, joint protection, sun protection)
Joint protection principles
- respect for pain
- balance activity and rest
- avoid repetitive activities

- maintain healthy body weight
- maintain good posture during daily activities
