Connective Tissues Flashcards
(20 cards)
5 Different types of connective tissues
Proper loose, proper dense, cartilage, bone, and blood
3 types of loose connective tissues
Areolar, Adipose, Reticular
3 types of dense connective tissues
Regular, irregular, and elastic
3 structural elements of connective tissues
Cells, Fibers, and Matrix (ground substance and fibers together make up the matrix)
Types of cells in connective tissues
Fibroblasts - collagen & elastin
Chondroblasts - cartilage
Osteoblasts - bone
Hematopoietic stem cells - blood
What do fibers do?
Fibers of the connective tissue provide support
Different types of fibers found in connective tissue matrix?
Collagen - Tough, provides resistance
Elastic - long, thin. Allow for stretch
Reticular - branched, form delicate networks
Hints for Adipose, Areolar, and Reticular (loose):
Adipose: bubbles, fat cells
Areolar: messy, many directional fibers, open space, + black dots
Reticular: cherry blossoms, no bubbles
Hints for Regular, Irregular, and Elastic
Regular: fibers going in one direction
Irregular: fibers in many directions
Elastic: curly hair
What are two things that get mistaken for each other?
Adipose and Simple squamous epithelium
- adipose = more perfect shapes and connect
- SSE = irregular shape and sometimes don’t connect
Areolar
- location, function, and feature
L - Capillaries
F - cushions organs
SF - scattered fibers
Reticular
- location, function, and feature
L - lymph Node + bone marrow + spleen
F - framework of organs
SF - blood cells
Dense Regular
- location, function, and feature
L - tendons
F - strong attachment
SF - Collagen fibers in waves
Dense Irregular
- location, function, and feature
L - Dermis of skin
F - strength & handles tension
SF - collagen fibers in waves
Adipose
- location, function, and feature
L - Heart and kidney + Under Skin
F - energy storage, thermal regulation, support & protect organs
Elastic
- location, function, and feature
L - artery walls
F - Elasticity
SF - Scattered elastic fibers
